On October 12, 2007, the Foundation held its inaugural fundraising event in Arizona. The day began with an afternoon at the Rockridge estate home of Scott Coles, complete with golf, a wonderful lunch and cocktails outdoors. As the sun set on someone who’s been on fire in the Valley, we got down to roasting Steve to a capacity crowd of more than 325 attendees at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale. With Wayne Gretzky introducing Steve, Mike D’Antoni noting the implausibility of Steve’s appearance as a fashionisto in GQ magazine, Dirk Nowitzki donning a rapunzel-like wig, Sarah McLachlan and Raja Bell teaming up for a video tribute as part of Raja’s presentation, Governor Napolitano commenting on Steve’s electability and many others, the evening treated guests to a lot of laughter and irreverence, all benefiting the Foundation’s early childhood education initiative in Arizona. Host Joel McHale (of E’s “The Soup”) presented a live auction featuring exclusive trips and packages (including a custom-designed original Steve Nash Celebrity Roast Sport Court with a game of 3-on-3 with Steve), and the poolside audience sat rapt through a stunning performance by the soulful John Legend. The Foundation looks forward to another event in the Phoenix area in 2009 — see you there!
